Highlights of the week!
Dish: chicken & potato adobo
Mam Lora talks to police detainees as they decant our sealed portions of hot adobo and rice into their own reusable bowls
Chicken adobo is the most famous Filipino dish. It’s both delicious and cheap to make. We add in potatoes and reduce the rice portion, to provide extra vitamins and minerals. And it’s a firm favourite among the ravenous people who depend upon our police detainee feeding program. Read on…
Opinion: killing the mentally ill
Another group of prisoners who traditionally get a favourite meal is those who are about to be killed. In the lame duck days of Donald Trump’s first presidency, the US government executed Lisa Montgomery by lethal injection. She was first woman since 1953 to receive the federal death penalty. Program: Ima
On the subject of women, who is Ima? Actually, that should be ‘What is she?’ She’s a vital part of our healthcare service! For those recently arrived in police custody, we create a electronic medical record and give an initial medical assessment (IMA). Read on…
Resource: What is ill-treatment?
Denying a detainee basic healthcare is a form of ill-treatment. And our long-awaited introduction to the challenging field of torture & ill-treatment medicine is now starting to roll off the production line! The first chapter to be published asks the fundamental question, ‘What is ill-treatment?’ Learn more…
Vacancy: ministry manager
There’s a lot going on and we need a new person on the ground to make sure it all ticks along like clockwork! Do you know anyone - perhaps a career missionary (medical or not) - who would make a good voluntary manager for our Philippine operations? Read on…
Fundraiser
Our ambulance has died!
All this costs money and we don’t have any to spare. Yet we’ve just lost one of our most expensive assets.
Happier days: van ferrying hot food & staff
Every day our faithful old van got pushed to its limit. It took food to hungry police detainees. It got our staff & equipment to prisons & police stations to perform mobile medical clinics. And it ferried our patients to where we needed them to go.
It was very old when we acquired it. It was costly to repair again and again. And then finally it got too sick to resuscitate.
So now our outputs slow and our public transport costs go through the roof. We desperately need to replace it.
Our local staff, and the thousands of patients we serve, will be so very grateful for every pound, dollar, euro and peso donated towards getting us back on the move.
You can of course donate via the GoFundMe platform. But a more cost effective option for us is to receive bank transfers direct into our UK or Philippine bank accounts with gifts marked 'van'. You might also wish to drop us an email with your contact details, so we can thank you and update you later.
Thanks so much for considering helping us! And please do contact us if you have a question about this fundraiser or if you’d like to offer to help with our fundraising efforts.

Construction
Our website is having a deep clean. Make sure you don’t trip over the occasional (wo)man-at-work! Please let us know if you spot any broken links or other glaring errors. ☺️
