Cut to the soul (self-harm):
Patient information leaflets (PILs)
All of our PILs have been written and illustrated specifically for detainees. There are two types:
Pictures > Words: these have lots of specially drawn pictures and just a very few, simple words.
Most of them are titled ‘Help! I have…!’
They can be understood by those who are functionally or completely illiterate.
They are also suitable for literate detainees who don’t read the language in which the few words are written.
Words > Pictures: a few have more words than pictures but are still readable for those with very limited literacy.
Most of them are universal, featuring advice that is applicable worldwide and illustrations using multiple different skin tones.
We are aiming to have them all available in English and French at the very least, and eventually also in Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, plus relevant local languages.
‘I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Matthew 25:36
