The Importance of Medical Ethics

Why Medical Ethics?

As a non-profit organisation that provides healthcare and related services to detainees globally, we understand the necessity for medical ethics. Working in healthcare, especially with vulnerable populations, poses many ethical quandaries and it is important to be able to think logically about how to proceed in certain clinical scenarios for the benefit of the patient and for wider society.

Therefore we believe, to support the next generation of healthcare professionals, we must ensure good quality training in medical ethics. The Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) is a charitable organisation that promotes the study of medical ethics and its application to real-world clinical practice. We have long endorsed the good work that the IME does for students in healthcare and would recommend their resources and membership.

Student essay competition

The IME also run competitions and award grants and scholarships to encourage participation in understanding ethics. Their 2021 medical student essay competition is now open for submissions with the title The medical student response to the Covid-19 pandemic . The closing date is 23.59, Sunday 4th July 2021. So if you are a medical student that has faced ethical issues raised by your experiences in responding to the pandemic, then consider entering this competition!

Resources Available!

Our new resources hub is open! Over the last few weeks we have been creating a more accessible page for the many resources we have produced for detainees and the healthcare professionals who care for them. We have books, patient information leaflets (PILs), professional informational leaflets (PrILs), videos and more.

We have also been working to translate these resources into different languages, as we know many detainees do not understand English. Currently we have resources in French, Romanian and soon Spanish! We welcome expressions of interest from those wishing to help us disseminate these resources into many more languages.

We hope you find the hub helpful as we add more resources over the coming months…

After an August pre-track reading month, September's theme 'What is Justice?' is being explored by the twelve, hand-picked participants. Our first Zoom webinar was held last week and we thrilled to see just how deeply our material is being engaged with.

We're already taking names of folk interested in the possibility of a 2021-2022 cohort. Interested?
