Post description

Your obligations

  • Pre-meetings: a week before each meeting,

  • Meetings:

    • attend four meetings per year, usually on the second Friday evening (Philippines time) of February (the AGM meeting), May, August and November

    • attend either in-person at our base in Olongapo or, if living far away, virtually over Google Meet

  • Post-meeting: occasional exchange of emails regarding board business

  • General: performance of duties according to our board governance manual

  • Optional: board members living near to Olongapo are welcome (but not at all obliged) to volunteer in the delivery of our advocacy programs.

Your expectations

  • Expenses: if living in the Zambales region, you may claim travelling expenses to attend the meetings in person

  • Line management: support in your role, from our board President and the co-founders

  • Salary: this is a voluntary role

  • Training: we provide new board members with induction training

Person specification

Experience, knowledge, qualifications & skills

  • Essential

    • Critical thinking skills

    • Experience of serving on a committee

    • Fluent in oral and written English

    • Respect for intercultural differences

    • Sufficient digital skills to open, read & reply to emails & email attachments

    Desirable

    • Basic knowledge of Tagalog language, to enable participation in occasional, spontaneous ‘Taglish’ rather than pure English board discussions

    • Experience of accountancy, criminal justice, fundraising, law, medicine, pastoral care or other areas useful to our work***

    • Experience of hot climate cultures, particularly the Philippines

    • Experience of serving on managing or governing boards

    • Knowledge of issues related to criminal justice systems, healthcare and/or places of detention

    • Physically and mentally fit enough to attend meetings virtually and to consider complex issues dealing with emotive subjects pertaining to the health and justice arena.

Availability

  • Essential

    • Access to a computer and secure internet connection within a country that is not hostile to Christianity

    • Available from mid-February 2025 for at least a year

  • Desirable

    • Available for at least three years

    • Available to attend Olongapo meetings and other events in person

Occupational Requirements*

  • This post relates to our Philippine legal entity. That said, for the avoidance of doubt regarding the UK Equalities Act 2010, person specifications marked with an asterisk are considered to be occupational requirements.

Board ratios**

  • Equal opportunities: as an organization, we promote equal opportunities; currently this board does not have any trustees with a registered disability, and it has an equal number of female and male members.

  • Nationality: our SEC registration stipulates that we have seven trustees. Filipino trustees must remain in the majority - that is, at least four members. Currently two trustees are non-Filipino. So this vacancy may be filled by either a Filipino or a non-Filipino.

Occupations***

  • Currently this board has representatives from the fields of book-keeping, church leadership, mediation, law, medicine and teaching. We particularly welcome applicants with other professional backgrounds.
