Participant information leaflet

Why do we want to interview you?

Your story is interesting to us. For example:

  • You may have an injury from a prison fight.

  • Perhaps you have a scar or upset from torture.

  • You may be sick now because you were not cared for in prison.

  • Maybe your children suffered while you were away in prison.

Writing down your story could make a difference for other prisoners. Doctors, nurses and officials could read it. Then they can think how to make things better.

Do I have to do it?

No. It is your decision. You will still get good care from us.

If I say yes, what happens?

We will look at our existing medical records about you.
We will interview you.
We might do drawings or take photos of a part of your body.
We will write a case study: this is your story with medical language.
We will not include information that makes you easy to identify (eg your name or a personalised tattoo).
We will post the case study onto our website.
We might ask a medical journal if they would like to publish it.

If I say yes, will it help me?

We cannot pay you or give you anything.
You might feel happy to know that sharing your story may make things better for other prisoners.

If I say yes, will it hurt me?

You might find it upsetting to talk about your experiences. We will try to help you.
There is a small chance that someone may recognise your story.
